How to Actually Believe in Yourself

What this video is about

Self-belief often gets talked about like something you’re born with or something you can talk yourself into. In my work, it looks a lot more like trust.

And trust, with yourself or anyone else, gets built through experience over time.

Why self-belief erodes

Most of us don’t lose faith in ourselves all at once. It wears down through a long string of small moments.

  • The plan that got dropped when a family member needed you.
  • The goal you set in January and let slide.
  • The thing you said you’d do “when life calms down.”

None of these make you a failure. Many of them happened because you were keeping promises to everyone else.

But your mind keeps score. Over time, it starts to doubt that your plans for yourself will hold.

Choosing promises you can keep

The mistake I see most often is starting too big. When the first promise is a dramatic overhaul, missing it reinforces the doubt you were trying to heal.

A better starting point:

  • Make it specific. “Walk for ten minutes after lunch” is easier to keep than “get healthier.”
  • Make it small enough to keep on a hard day. If it only works on your best days, it’s too big for now.
  • Make it about you. Not something that also benefits everyone else in the house. Something that’s yours.
  • Notice when you keep it. Say it out loud or write it down. Evidence only works if you let yourself see it.

Why this matters

Midlife can stir up a lot of “Who am I now?” questions. Kids leaving, careers shifting, and bodies changing can cloud your perspective. In those seasons, it helps to have something steady underneath you.

A track record of keeping your word to yourself becomes that foundation.

When you miss a promise, and you will, treat it the way you’d treat a friend who missed one. Notice, adjust, and keep the next one.

Doubt doesn’t disappear overnight. It just gets outvoted.

Your best first move

Choose one promise for tomorrow that’s almost too small to bother with. Then keep it.
