Give Yourself the Bedtime You Give Your Kids
What this video is about
Most parents I know can recite their kids’ bedtime routine in their sleep. Bath, pajamas, story, and then lights out.
Then the house settles down, and suddenly it’s midnight and they’re still on the couch with a phone in hand.
This video is about extending yourself the same care you give the people you love.
Why staying up feels so good
There’s a reason those late hours are hard to give up. For many parents, it’s the first time all day that nobody needs anything from them.
Researchers have even described a pattern called “revenge bedtime procrastination,” where people delay sleep to reclaim some free time after a day that didn’t feel like theirs.
That need for time to yourself is real and worth honoring. The problem is the trade. Those hours come straight out of the sleep that helps you handle tomorrow with patience and a clear head.
Building a wind-down for you
You already know how to do this. You’ve done it for your kids for years. A few ways to borrow that wisdom:
- Pick a time and treat it as real. Not perfect, just consistent most nights.
- Start the routine earlier than lights out. Kids don’t go from playing to asleep in one step, and neither do you.
- Find your “me time” somewhere else. If late nights are your only time to yourself, look for even a small pocket earlier in the day.
- Give your phone a bedtime too. Charging it outside the bedroom removes one big reason to stay up.
Why this matters
Many of us absorbed the idea that being worn out is just part of loving your family well. It isn’t, that’s a myth.
Rest is part of how you keep showing up.
Your kids also learn about rest by watching you, not only by being sent to bed. When they see you protect your sleep, they learn that grown-ups need care too.
This is a good season for a parent reset.
Your best first move
Choose a bedtime for yourself for the next three nights, and set an alarm thirty minutes before it to start winding down.
