Insight Isn’t the Change

What this video is about

“I know exactly why I do this. So why can’t I stop?”

I hear some version of that almost every week. It’s one of the most frustrating places to be, especially for thoughtful people who have done a lot of reflecting.

This video is part of my Best First Move series, and it’s about the gap between understanding a pattern and changing it.

Why insight stalls

Insight lives in the thinking part of your brain. The reactions you want to change usually don’t.

When you’re rushed, tired, or stressed, your body runs the response it’s practiced most, and it does that faster than your understanding can catch up.

That’s why you can explain your pattern beautifully on a calm Sunday and still repeat it on a chaotic Monday.

You’re not failing to learn. You’re running into the difference between knowing and practicing.

What helps the change take hold

A new response needs repetition, the same way the old one did. A few things make those reps more likely:

  • Decide ahead of time. Choosing your response in the moment is hard. Choosing it the night before is much easier.
  • Keep it simple. One sentence or one physical action is easier to reach for under stress than a whole new philosophy.
  • Look for an early signal. Tight shoulders, a certain tone in your voice, a phrase you always say. That cue is your chance to pause.
  • Count partial wins. Catching yourself halfway through the old pattern is progress.

Why this matters

Whether you’re parenting young kids, adult kids, or an aging parent, family moments have a way of bringing out reactions you thought you’d outgrown. That’s an invitation to practice it where it counts.

Your insight is still valuable. It tells you where to aim. It just needs a next step to become something you can see in your day.

Your best first move

Think about the next predictable hard moment this week. Write one sentence about how you’d like to respond. Read it right before that moment arrives.
